Any data that you store on a pendrive, harddisk or storage card is organized and formatted depending on the file-system that you choose. Since all of this happens transparently, we are usually not aware of it, however in some situations, the choosing the right file system can be quite beneficial. Since Windows XP, NTFS has become the standard default file system, replacing FAT32. NTFS is more robust, secure and provides many more options than FAT32. Yet when it comes to portable devices such as pendrives, FAT32 continues to be used. While FAT32 does give better performance on pendrives, often it might be useful for you to use NTFS instead. So when should you use NTFS, and how? NTFS allows you to assign permissions to files, such that only specific users can access / modify / delete / run them.
This can give you much better control over what people can do with the contents of your pendrive. Although any sufficiently advanced computer user will be able to overcome these limitations, most people will jut leave alone a file which isn't opening. NTFS also allows you to encrypt your data, in which case it is difficult for even an advanced computer user to open the file. The encrypted data is only openable by the same user as the one who encrypted the file, and on the same computer. In NTFS you can also transparently compress the files.



This means that although the files will take up less space on your computer, they will open just like normal file, and most application need not bother with the fact that they are compressed. With the limited capacities of pendrives this can be quite useful. Here to, it is to be noted that you will not gain much by compressing already compressed files such as JPG images, music files or videos Reviews. To use NTFS of your pendrive, first of all, backup all the data on it, since it will be lost while formatting.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can simply right click on your pendrive and use the format option, which allow you to select the NTFS filesystem for formatting your pendrive. On Windows XP systems, NTFS on pendrives is supported, however it provides you no clear way to format it as such. Here, you can use the commandline tool "format" to achieve the same effect. Here is how you can format your pendrive in NTFS on Windows XP: •First find out your pendrives drive letter. •Click on Start->Run... •Type "cmd" •In the command prompt which opens up, type "format /FS:NTFS X:" where "X:" is the drive letter for the pendrive. Now after confirming that you indeed want to format your drive, you will end up with a NTFS pendrive.

There is no limit to various shapes and sizes of pen drives - one even looks like a delectable piece of sushi! Too much of designing however leads to bulkiness. Pen drives have been integrated with other items that people carry or wear like - watches, pens and even a pen-knife. Some even look like bricks and others like toys.

This paved the way for the entry of pen drives. Pen drives have flash memory and so are also called flash drives. Flash memory was originally invented by Intel in 1988 and they provided a faster access to data. Flash memory could be used by any electrical application which did not require electrical current. M-Systems (SanDisk) were the first to work on this concept in 1998. Initially, SanDisk collaborated with IBM in producing the pen drive, but later on it bought all the rights and produced advanced versions of this pen drive.

Flash memory was invented by Dr. Fujio Masuoka for Toshiba in 1980. Flash memory can be both NOR and NAND types. NOR-type flash chip was brought into the market by Intel in 1988. NOR-based flash memory soon gave way to the more affordable NAND-type flash memory. 1989 saw the advent of NAND flash through Toshiba. Comparatively, NAND had faster erase and write times, greater storage capacities and lower costs.



A pen drive uses NAND flash memory chip. NAND chip having storage capacity of 1 GB was introduced by SanDisk and Toshiba in 2005. Samsung followed suit with a 2 GB version followed by 4GB and 8 GB in the next year. Today we can get 128 GB memory pen drive in the market!

The latest technology to be tested in pen drives is the U3 platform. The security constraint has been greatly overcome by this technology. SanDisk has developed this platform. The pen drive can be made tamper-proof and integrated with passwords for security measures. U3 platform in pen drives utilizes ICQ instant messaging software. This software helps the pen drive owner to email and Google search with ease.










The LaunchPad interface is enabled inside the pen drive using U3 platform. Many different types of software can be loaded in the pen drive using this interface and various jobs can be performed. These include photo management, password protection, anti-virus, file synchronization and call-making software.




The U3 platform in pen drives has the ability to personalize any PC. It has the ability to customize desktop, games web browsers, e-mail programs, instant messaging and personal preferences. However, file security and data privacy are the most important considerations in pen drives using U3. Its unique password-protect software does not allow any breach of security.

Pen drives have thus made a mark for themselves in our lives and are now irreplaceable. Be it data management, storage, transfer or security; pen drives cannot be done without. Their portability and multi-utility make them the ideal companion for any computer buff. However, care must be taken to keep it entirely virus-free so that it does not transform into a bane from a boon.

But the days are not far when pen drives with terabytes will be common in use.

The previous generation of pen drive is the thumb drive. They were also named as the flash drives, the chip sticks and the USB keys. But the core technology is same with every form. In comparison to its previous generation, the pen drives now come with greater and advanced features and are the multi-utility flash memory.

Now the advanced version of pen drives is available with in built cards that enables transferring data from the cards of a mobile phones or camera without the help of a computer. The credit of inventing the pen drives goes to IBM. It was invented in 1988 to replace the floppy disks, but IBM never patented it. IBM contracted in M-Systems to manufacture the Pen Drive and the patent is now owned by them.

The pen drive is a modern floppy disk. The main difference is that a floppy disk has moving parts which makes the data stored on the drive vulnerable to loss. A pen drive, on the other hand is a solid state device i.e. it has no moving parts. This makes it possible to almost completely seal the pen drive making it dust-proof and the common magnetic fields. Hence, a pen drive is a much safer option for storing important data.



The latest operating systems like (Windows XP, Linux and Mac OS 2) can recognize these pen drives and mount them automatically. Once it is connected, recognized and mounted by the operating system, it appears just like any other partition of the hard disk except it is named as removable storage.

The pen drive can be removed any time after it is un-mounted (safely remove hardware in case of Windows) and can be re-plugged into the same or a different machine to be used again. A pen drive`s most important use is to transport data and files from one machine to another. For e.g. one can simply copy all the word processing documents, images and spreadsheets to the pen drive, carry it along and copy the files on his/her home computer and work on it at home.

Some users have found the pen drive useful in moving their internet browser History, Cache, Cookies, and other transient data. This improves their privacy and security as no traces of the work done on the machine is left on the PC. Once copied to the drive, the files can be made more secured by encryption or any other method of security.

The pen drives can also be used to store operating systems to boot the computer. This makes them popular for repair and diagnostic work. Instead of carrying tools and maintenance software applications on CDs, a pen drive can be used which is faster and can be manipulated easily in case the software is upgraded or is no more useful.
